Chef Trio by Timothy Boss
SCO will offer its 19th annual “Gift of Music” Family Concert, with performances on March 14, 2010 at 2pm and 4pm. Both concerts will be held in Hudson Hall at Willamette University in downtown Salem. Performances are free admission, but get your tickets in advance – this event is sure to sell out! (get your tickets online!)
The performance of orchestral music is much like baking a cake. First we must gather our ingredients (instruments), then we mix them together (rehearsal) according to the recipe (score) created by the composer. Sounds simple enough, but how does it work? This Family Concert will explore how composers combine different instrumental ingredients to create sounds and colors from the orchestra and the role that each instrument plays in creating the perfect musical dessert.
Conductor Michael Gesme, known for his personable and engaging performances, will lead the orchestra in selected movements from Beethoven’s 2nd Symphony and Mendelssohn’s 4th Symphony. Gesme is Music Director of Linfield Chamber Orchestra (McMinnville) and Central Oregon Symphony (Bend).

Brady Schmidt
Brady Schmidt, senior at North Salem High School, will be featured soloist in Fritz Kreisler’s Tambourin Chinois. The piece was originally written for violin and piano and later transcribed for orchestra, but Schmidt will play a version adapted for marimba soloist with orchestra! Schmidt was the 2009 winner of the Connie Fritz Memorial Concerto Competition.
After each performance, children and families are invited to participate in the annual “Instrument Petting Zoo.” Children will have the opportunity to meet SCO musicians and see, touch, and even play real musical instruments.
In conjunction with this Family Concert, SCO held an art contest for kids, open to elementary students in Marion and Polk counties. Timothy Boss, 3rd grader at Stayton Elementary, won the contest with his drawing of a trio of chefs. This artwork will be used in all concert publicity including postcards, advertisements, posters, and program books. Timothy and his family will be featured guests at the concert and meet the conductor.
Salem Chamber Orchestra will be collecting food donations for Marion Polk Food Share as part of the annual Rotary Food Drive and the League of American Orchestras’ “Orchestras Feeding America” national food drive. Bring your food donations to the concert and receive a coupon for $2 off SCO tickets.
The 19th annual “Gift of Music” Family Concert is generously supported in part by the City of Salem Transient Occupancy Tax Fund, Spirit Mountain Community Fund, and the Salem Foundation. The Instrument Petting Zoo is sponsored by Salem Electric and SELCO Community Credit Union.
