SCO will offer its 19th annual “Gift of Music” Family Concert, with performances on March 14, 2010 at 2pm and 4pm. Both concerts will be held in Hudson Hall at Willamette University in downtown Salem. Performances are free admission, but get your tickets in advance – this event is sure to sell out! (get your tickets online!)

The performance of orchestral music is much like baking a cake. First we must gather our ingredients (instruments), then we mix them together (rehearsal) according to the recipe (score) created by the composer. Sounds simple enough, but how does it work? This Family Concert will explore how composers combine different instrumental ingredients to create sounds and colors from the orchestra and the role that each instrument plays in creating the perfect musical dessert. Timothy Boss, 3rd grader from Stayton Elementary School, won this year’s Art Contest!  His winning entry depicts a trio of chefs playing and singing into a microphone.

As winner, Timothy’s artwork will be featured on all concert publicity.  He and his family will be special guests at the “Gift of Music” Family Concert, and Timothy will get to meet conductor Michael Gesme at the concert.

The Family Concert will be held Sunday, March 14 at 2pm & 4pm, in Hudson Hall at Willamette University. Tickets are free, but a donation is suggested. Danny Seidenberg has enjoyed a varied and eclectic musical career moving between classical, jazz and pop styles as a performer and composer, arranger, and educator. He made his solo viola debut at age 16 with the Pittsburgh Symphony as part of their Young People’s Concert series. A Juilliard graduate and veteran New York player, he is probably best known for his 12 years as the violist of the Turtle Island String Quartet. (more…)

 

Meet the Maestro, Robert Ashens

San Francisco — Bay Area-based musician Robert Ashens, whose distinguished career as pianist and conductor has brought him to many world capitols, is Artistic Director of Opera San Luis Obispo (formerly Pacific Repertory Opera) and Artistic Director / co-founder, Opera Oregon. The Maestro conducts ballet and symphonic works with companies nationally and internationally; he concertizes nationally as a solo pianist and chamber ensemble artist, while maintaining coaching studios in San Francisco, Oakland and Corvallis (OR). He also leads cultural tours to Vienna, as well as coaching and conducting in various parts of Italy.

This week, Robert visits Salem Chamber Orchestra as guest conductor for the Valentine’s Day Concerts on February 13 & 14, 2010.  He has conducted SCO twice before, in April 2008 and 2009, and we’re thrilled to have him back!

Robert Ashens is a member of Mid-Valley Rotary in Eugene, Phi Beta and is listed in WHO’S WHO IN AMERICAN MUSIC.

With a repertoire of over one hundred operas, he has conducted to great acclaim for regional companies throughout the United States and in many major cities of Europe, especially in Italy.  He has also accompanied many opera luminaries in concert.  Ashens is in constant demand as a lecturer, accompanist and program director for concerts and recitals nationwide. As an educator for over thirty years, Ashens’ unique style and commitment focuses on inspiring people of all ages and backgrounds through his dynamic, energetic and lively presentations of this exciting art form. His lively wit and humor continue to enthrall opera audiences wherever he travels.

Alessandro Taverna was born in Caorle near Venice in 1983. He began his piano studies at the Music Academy of Santa Cecilia in Portogruaro with Laura Candiago Ferrari, graduating cum laude at the Conservatorio C. Pollini in Padua in 2001 He continued with Piero Rattalino at the Portogruaro Music School for Advanced Studies where he obtained his Final Diploma. He worked with Franco Scala and Leonid Margarius, and as well as attending classes of Louis Lortie and Boris Petrushansky at the International Piano Academy in Imola, where he received his Artist’s Diploma in November 2008. In January 2009, Alessandro enrolled at the ‘Santa Cecilia’ National Music Academy in Rome to study with Sergio Perticaroli. (more…)

Italian award-winning pianist Alessandro Taverna will perform a solo piano recital of all Chopin works in honor of the composer’s 200th birthday.  The recital will be held on Thursday, February 11 at 7:30pm in Hudson Hall at Willamette University.  Tickets are $15 adults, $10 education employees, and $5 students. Unbande (formerly Silk Mountain Project) returns for a series of Jazz Soirees in the Cyrus Reed Theatre in the Reed Opera House.   The first soiree will be on Tuesday February 16 at 7:30pm.

Unbande is a jazz/classical/pop/rock crossover chamber group comprised of violists Danny Seidenberg and Daryl Silberman, cellist Noah Seitz, and jazz guitarist Christopher Woitach. They play a fun and eclectic mix of music that is great for all ages!

Included in the event will be a free wine and dessert reception.  The Jazz Soiree series is generously sponsored by First Pacific Corporation.  Proceeds benefit Salem Chamber Orchestra.

Tickets are $25 adults, $15 students when purchased in advance. Tickets are available online or at Travel Salem (503-581-4325).
