The Silk Mountain Project was created in 2009 to advance the cause of chamber jazz/pop/rock improvisational crossover styles played by strings, and in particular to celebrate the unique voice of the viola. There’s a style for everyone; it’s a fun and eclectic mix, and all inspired by the beautiful mountains of Oregon!

Come enjoy a fun-filled and intimate evening of American music! Soprano Michelle Mendoza and pianist Noreen Murdock will perform a selection of songs by Aaron Copland, George Gershwin, and other arrangements of American folk songs. SCO’s principal oboist Mitch Iimori, known as the “Multi-Instrumentalist”, will join the program to play some favorite tunes on the banjo and guitar. You’ll even have the opportunity to sing along! After the recital, enjoy a reception of autumn treats – caramel apple bites, pumpkin pie, hot apple cider, and Starbucks coffee! Proceeds benefit the Salem Chamber Orchestra.

Salem Chamber Orchestra continues the celebration of its 25th anniversary season on Nov. 21st & 22nd with the return of Bruce McIntosh, Conductor and Music Director Laureate. Les Green, tenor, and Mike Hettwer, horn, are featured soloists in works by Benjamin Britten. The concert will showcase top students from the award-winning Salem-Keizer music programs and will include works by Handel, Mendelssohn, and Bloch.

Schmidt to perform with Salem Chamber Orchestra in March 2010

On Sunday November 1, 2009, three finalists competed in live performance at the fourth annual Connie Fritz Memorial Concerto Competition for the opportunity to perform with Salem Chamber Orchestra. After excellent and impressive performances by Brady Schmidt, marimba, Emily Potter, flute, and Jenna Ahn, violin, the judges awarded Brady Schmidt with the grand prize. Brady will perform his piece, Tambourin Chinois by Fritz Kreisler with Salem Chamber Orchestra at the “Gift of Music” Family Concert on March 14, 2010. (more…)
